Jasser

American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) has established itself as a voice of Muslims who believe they can practice their faith more freely and Islamically when religion and state are separated. Learn more about AIFD and its founder M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., at www.aifdemocracy.org.

Lisa

Lisa James has taken a leave of absence to join Congressman Shadegg’s staff as Deputy Chief of Staff. We will miss her at GCJPR, but are confident that she will be an asset to the Congressman’s office.

Miracle League

The Maryvale Family YMCA Miracle League recently completed its first season which started with an opening ceremony, featuring Major League Baseball players and media avail coordinated by the GCJPR team. Although there was much hub bub surrounding opening day events, the Miracle League players stood out as the real MVP’s. GCJPR was proud to be part of the opening of Arizona’s first official Miracle League field. For more information call the Maryvale Family YMCA at 623-873-9622.

note
Dear Friends,

We’ve been tweeting, blogging and all things digital- so it is about time our newsletter got a new media makeover. Although our mailer won’t be hitting your doorstep any longer, we hope you will enjoy the new GCJPR update when it pops into your inbox.

We know this digital newsletter will be a quick and informative way of keeping our friends up to date on what is happening in the GCJPR office. Although we are excited to save some trees and get in touch with our inner techie, we will always value the importance of our face to face relationships. This newsletter is just an opening dialogue, we want to hear from you too. Visit our twitter and facebook- or reach us outside the digital world on the phone and schedule a meeting.

We hope this note finds you happy and healthy.

Sincerely,

APS has a solar state of mind, Solar Tour ’09

BusShowcasing the prospect of a clean energy future, Arizona Public Service (APS) recently concluded the first ever solar tour of Arizona, bringing the message of solar energy to enthusiastic audiences.
The APS Solar Tour ’09 hit the road in May for three stops. The first stop in Flagstaff was to launch the APS Community Power Project, a “free” pilot solar energy program offered to Flagstaff customers.  The next stop brought together two of the state’s most recognizable features, the Grand Canyon and the sun.  The stop highlighted the Canyon’s commitment to clean energy as the visitor center went “solar” with 84 operational panels.
Last stop of the tour was back home in Phoenix at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, where a new member of the APS family was announced.  Starwood Solar I, when completed in 2013, will be the world’s largest solar facility, generating power for 73,000 homes.  The facility will be built in the Harquahala Valley 75 miles west of Phoenix.
To learn more about the tour and how to “go green” visit www.aps.com and please check out the APS Solar Tour ’09 on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/apssolartour.

Sharon Lechter focuses on financial literacy for all generations

BusA critical financial education bill has been introduced in the U.S. Senate that will improve financial literacy education in K-12 education and enhance student knowledge of consumer, economic and personal finance concepts. The Financial and Economic Literacy Improvement Act of 2009, introduced by Senator Murray and Senator Cochran, has the potential to bring the education our children so desperately need into public schools.  FELIA will authorize up to $125 million in spending to create a program for three different grade levels, K-12, that will mandate standardized financial education as a core-competency class. In addition, another $125 will be authorized for use in post-secondary education.
In combination with this higher education bill, Sharon Lechter has brought the financial literacy movement to younger children and teens with the launch of YOUTHpreneur in April. YOUTHpreneur helps ignite the entrepreneurial spark in the younger generations through an innovative and educational business kit, a gumball machine and a positive reinforcement SMS messaging program known as TAPS. Together, these elements help prepare kids for a financially smart future. It’s already received rave reviews from the Boys & Girls Club of the greater Phoenix area. GCJPR has coordinated outreach and planned partnerships for this great movement. We recommend you check it out for yourself at www.youthpreneur.com.

Marines honor Marines through scholarship foundation

MCSF LogoIn 1962 a small group of former Marines demonstrated the indisputable fact that, “Marines take care of their own”.  That year, the first Marine Corps Scholarship fundraiser was held and raised $1,500 to send the child of a World War II Marine veteran to college.
Today, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is celebrating its 45th Anniversary. This non-profit Foundation is the largest provider of educational scholarships for children of military servicemen and women. To date, the foundation has awarded over 22,000 individual scholarships. This year there are 60 Arizona students who are receiving scholarship funds.
On April 16, GCJPR was able to assist Marines in their efforts to introduce the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation to Marines in the state of Arizona with a local “Friend Raising Reception” in Scottsdale. In addition, GCJPR will be producing the “Salut! To the Corps” wine tasting fundraiser in Houston this fall.
